Grace Martin Taylor:

A Life in Art

Born in Morgantown, WV in 1903, Taylor studied at WVU, and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Taylor spent a lifetime exploring printmaking, painting, and collage, reflecting a unique Appalachian sentiment throughout her work. Her work is in many public collections, including the Smithsonian, Boston Museum of Art, and the British Museum.

Queen Brooks

January 15 – June 10, 2020….In the Richards Gallery

Coming to art later in life, Queen Brooks has wasted no time in developing her own, unique voice. Working in multi-media, and often forming constructions, Brooks’ work is refreshing, honest, and captivating. Holding an MFA from OSU, Brooks has received the Lila Wallace, Readers Digest International Artist Award, granting an artist-in-residence in the French port city of Abidjan on the Ivory Coast. She has received many awards, including the Ohioana Career Award.

The Pattern of Love: The Work of Sumiko and Kaname Takada

Husband and wife artists Sumiko and Kaname Takada share a life in clay. Each, in very different ways, explores the intricasies of complex geometric designs integrated into, and onto, elegant vessel forms; she inlays colored clays into carved designs while he layers glazes in complex geometric patterns over the surface.

The best of the region! Open to artists who reside within an 85 mile radius of Portsmouth, the Cream of the Crop is a competitive, juried exhibition that showcases the best of the region.

It is the time when our community embraces the unique voices of creativity from our distinct area.
